About Eastern Wyoming Avalanche Information
After back-to-back avalanche fatalities in the Sierra Madres a small number of search and rescue members and the sheriff were impacted by the loss of two members of the snowmobiling community. These search and rescue members and the sheriff sought out a way to provide preventive information, i.e. observations and forecasts; when at the time of the mentioned fatalities there was close to zero avalanche forecast information available for back country users. This small group first created the Carbon County Avalanche Operations and developed it into the Eastern Wyoming Avalanche Information Center. Starting in the 2026/2027 season as the first motorized based avalanche center. A few search and rescue members and a local sheriff carried a passion to create safer experiences for back country users; setting a new standard and surpassing expectations.
Eastern Wyoming Avalanche Information Center is the world’s only nonprofit motorized based avalanche observation and forecast center, dedicated to improving avalanche safety for snowmobilers, snowbikers, and motorized winter backcountry users. Through field observations, rider-focused forecasts, weather and snowpack information, education, and community partnerships, the organization helps riders access practical information before entering avalanche terrain.
Community-Powered Safety Information
As a nonprofit, the center will rely on donations, grants, sponsorships, memberships, volunteer observations, and community partnerships to keep its information free and accessible. Riders will be encouraged to submit observations, support weather and observation infrastructure, attend education events, and help build a culture of shared responsibility in avalanche terrain.
